How to Wash Graphic Tees So the Print Never Cracks (Care Guide)

A great graphic tee is an investment, and the difference between one that lasts five months and one that lasts five years comes down to how you wash it. The print is the first thing to go: cracking, fading, or peeling at the edges. The good news is that protecting it takes almost no extra effort. Here is the exact routine we recommend for every tee in our T-Shirts collection.

Why graphic tee prints crack and fade

Most modern graphic tees use either screen-printed ink or a direct-to-garment (DTG) print sitting on the surface of the cotton. Three things damage that layer: high heat, aggressive agitation, and harsh detergents. Heat from a tumble dryer is by far the biggest culprit - it bakes and stiffens the ink until it splits. Once you remove heat from the equation, you have solved most of the problem.

  • Heat - dryers and hot washes stiffen and crack ink
  • Friction - the print rubbing against other clothes and the drum
  • Chemicals - bleach and fabric softener break down the print layer

The 6-step wash routine

1. Turn the shirt inside out

This single step protects the print from rubbing against the drum and other garments. It is the easiest win in the entire routine.

2. Wash in cold water (30C / 86F or below)

Cold water keeps the ink flexible and stops colours bleeding. It is also better for the cotton fibres, which means less shrinking and pilling.

3. Use a gentle or delicates cycle

Less agitation means less friction on the print. If you only have a standard cycle, that is fine - just keep the spin speed moderate.

4. Skip the fabric softener

Softener leaves a coating that dulls prints and reduces the cotton's breathability. A small amount of mild liquid detergent is all you need. Never use bleach on a printed tee.

5. Air dry, never tumble dry

Hang or lay flat to dry. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat or air-only setting and remove the shirt while slightly damp. This is the step that adds years to a tee's life.

6. Iron inside out, avoid the print

If you iron, do it on the reverse side and never press a hot iron directly onto the design. A pressing cloth adds an extra layer of safety.

Storing tees so they keep their shape

Fold heavyweight tees rather than hanging them - hangers stretch the shoulders and neckline over time. Lightweight tees are fine on padded hangers. Keep them out of direct sunlight, which fades both fabric and print even in storage.

This matters most for heavier garments like the pieces in our Hoodies and Sweatshirts collection, where the weight of the fabric pulls on the seams if hung for long periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash graphic tees in the washing machine?

Yes. Turn the shirt inside out, use cold water and a gentle cycle, skip fabric softener, and air dry. The machine itself is not the problem - heat and friction are.

Why is my t-shirt print cracking?

Almost always from tumble drying or washing too hot. Heat bakes the ink until it stiffens and splits. Switch to cold washes and air drying and the remaining print will stop deteriorating.

Should I wash a new t-shirt before wearing it?

Yes, one cold wash before first wear removes manufacturing residue and sets the fibres. Wash it inside out on its own or with similar colours the first time.

How do I stop a black tee from fading?

Wash inside out in cold water, avoid bleach and optical-brightener detergents, and dry out of direct sunlight. Washing less often (airing between wears) also keeps black looking deep.
